 GPS Pet Tracking

GPS pet tracking devices are one of the newest advancements in tracking options available. In the event that your pet is lost or stolen, you can use the tracking device to find it quickly.

Most GPS pet trackers use a collar or harness to keep track of your pet. The device is attached to the collar or harness, and it sends wireless transmissions through the internet, satellites, and cell towers, depending on the model.

Some of these devices can be rather large and uncomfortable for a pet, so it’s important to look for a device that is small, lightweight, and thoroughly tested for safety. Some units have VHF antennae that could get caught in bushes or elsewhere, potentially trapping an animal or choking it. If you get a unit with an antenna, be sure the antenna is flexible enough to slip out of any potential traps.

Most GPS pet tracking devices have a limited operating time, because they operate on batteries. Some units can put themselves into sleep mode while your pet isn’t moving to conserve batteries, but it’s important to remember to change or charge the batteries often.

You should be certain that the unit is waterproof. If the device says “water resistant”, it may still be susceptible to water damage if your pet is out in the rain or goes for a swim, so be certain it says “waterproof” instead.

Unfortunately, GPS pet tracking devices are still too large and bulky to be useful in tracking cats and small dogs. They are more suitable for medium to large dogs, so keep that in mind when searching for a device for your pet.

Most GPS pet trackers are affordable. They generally range from $50 up to around $350. A few require a monthly fee for tracking service. Many of them work by sending signals to your cell phone or PDA to let you know where your pet is located, and others offer real-time tracking via the internet, so you need a computer to track your pet.

There are also models that transmit the data via radio waves to a handheld receiver. Unfortunately, these models can be extremely expensive, ranging from $400 to $500 or more, and they have a very limited range compared to standard GPS trackers.
